Just a caveat on the swords in medieval times. Long swords were mostly the province of nobles, Knights, and some mounted cavalry. It was far too difficult to teach someone mastery of the sword when it took most nobles and knights years of training to become proficient with it. It was much easier and cost effective to simply give them pikes, pole axes, and other long weapons because of the limited amount of time it would take to train to proficiency on the battlefield. Most battles were also simply judged on who could get their entire army on to the field first and rout the opposing army. The sword was mostly a symbo of status and prestige on top of being a gentleman’s weapon. Now I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure my military history is solid on this.

You’re absolutely right, on all counts. The sword has long been the weapon of the monarchy and the elite. Owning a sword meant you were definitely somethin’ somethin’ back in old times.
